Summary

VSCode/Prettier ignores the setting "prettier.configPath".

I prefer to have a global config for personal projects than copy/pasting config files to each. In my settings.json, I have tried:

  • "prettier.configPath": "/home/kjkent/.config/prettier/prettierrc"
  • "prettier.configPath": "${userHome}/.config/prettier/prettierrc"
  • "prettier.configPath": "${env:XDG_CONFIG_HOME}/prettier/prettierrc"

I have also tried .prettierrc in case Prettier enforces its config be a dotfile, no change. If it's relevant, if I ask Prettier to format its own rc file, it does so and recognises the existence of the config due to being in the same folder, but, infers it to be a YAML file rather than a JSON file. Logs below.

Github Repository to Reproduce Issue

N/A

Steps To Reproduce:

  1. Create $HOME/.config/prettier/prettierrc with the content in "Additional information", and set one of the above strings in VSCode's $HOME/.config/Code/User/settings.json
  2. In VS Code, open a JSON file from a folder that is not -- nor a child of -- the folder from step 1.
  3. Format the document using the Prettier vscode extension

Expected result

Prettier parses the config file and applies the formatting it specifies

Actual result

Prettier logs show no recognition of the config file, with Prettier falling back to defaults

As an aside, I think the README.md section on configuration is a bit confusing:

  • There's a sentence on direct VS Code settings being a fallback for non-project files, and subsection on "Configuring Default Options" in regards to the "prettier.configPath"-defined settings. But, IMO, the function of the VS Code settings resembles what people would expect of "default options". Considering local .prettierrc settings are ignored when prettier.configPath is defined, the configPath settings aren't defaults as they're never defaulted-to; they're enforced. I'd guess more people want to have "their settings" as a backup (currently implemented in VS Code settings) but prioritise project settings, than their settings override project definitions. However the latter is more prominently worded in the docs and with wording I found confusing.

  • The last line in the Configuration section says "If any local configuration file is present (i.e. .prettierrc) the VS Code settings will NOT be used.", perhaps in combination with the above, confused me as "prettier.configPath" could be construed as a VS Code setting, yet its presence does the opposite of what's said as it ignores local configuration files.

Edit: The README.md is apparently outdated as there's a section that v10.0.0 will provide Prettier 3.0.0 when it's out of preview. The current extension is v10.40.0 and Prettier is at v3.3, but the extension is bundling 2.8.8. Happy to move this to a new issue if requested.

After installing Prettier rather than using the built-in, the extension now acknowledges and uses the configuration file defined in prettier.configPath. Perhaps it was due to the extension not recognising useExperimentalTernaries as the version of Prettier it ships predates it? In this case, it would perhaps be preferable to just ignore the unknown option, or, failing that, alert the user to the cause rather than failing silently.

Unfortunately I'll have to wait for an update to use the experimental ternaries option in VS Code settings, it seems
