Early Access Program

  • Yes, this is related to an Early Access Program feature.

Kindly describe the bug and include as much detail as possible on what you were doing so we can reproduce the bug.

So until about a weekish ago, Everything would work smoothly, except for some other issues that did annoy me, but I had workarounds for them. Those issues was pieces os not working after a while. Not a big deal since I would just close it in task manager and reopen it once it was all closed to force a hard restart of the whole system. But, now (thanks for listening to my little rant up there) there is an issue that I cannot workaround. For some reason pieces cannot get any context from any files or folders, and its getting pretty annoying to the fact that I have started using other softwares because at least they can look at the files and suggest changes or edits that actually have something to do with my code. I believe this happened ever since i updated pieces os about 2-3 updates ago, but cannot pinpoint any specific cause. Another cause may be that fact that I downloaded Ollama but never really used it.

Also, just wanted to say, it recognizes that I have files and their names, so for example if I have a file called index.html, it will recognize that and tell me to do something in index html, but for some reason it cannot read anything in that file until I copy and paste everything into its chat, and that can get very annoying when I have files with thousands of lines of code.

Hi @RamanBaig, thank you for taking the time to reach out, this sounds very frustrating. We have been tracking a few persistent bugs in this feature and would really appreciate your help in resolving them. It would be very useful if you could share a couple of details here:

  1. Did you also have the Long term memory enabled when you encountered this issue?
  2. Which foundation model were you using (Claude, gpt etc.)?
  3. Would you be able to share the specific file or folder you were having issues with?
  4. Are you running this in macos/windows/linux?

I would be more than happy to jump on a call if you prefer or if any of this is unclear.

Hello, thank you for replying. Yes, I had Long Term Memory enabled when I encountered this issue. I was using Claude sonnet 3.5 when the issue first came up, but switched to gpt and still had the issue persist. The issue was with every folder I used, the project folder/files and even test folders/files. I am running this in windows.

Thank you @RamanBaig this is really useful. Could you help me with a couple of follow ups to help me reproduce?

  1. What version of windows are you currently running?
  2. How many files would you say, approximately, are in the folders you are adding?
  3. What proportion of those files do you see in the related files tab under the system message in the chat?

Thanks again with your help on this one. I’ve seen this a number of times and have been struggling to reproduce so any help here is really appreciated!

The windows version that I am using is Windows 11 Home, 24H2. There are abour 9 files in the folder, but i dont really use any of those files. For example, my package.json isnt something i am constantly editing, it pretty much just sits there. I really only use 4 files and those 4 files are the ones in the related files tab in the chat. 3 of them have thousands of lines of code, while the other one is at a more modest number around 200-300. I dont know the exact number of lines off the top of my head and would have to check. Thanks alot for the response and I look forward to using Pieces once again 👍

Hi @RamanBaig, in which case would you be able to hop on with @mark-at-pieces ? I am on CEST so 6h ahead of EST.

There are a couple of changes I've made today which could resolve your issue. If you can reproduce the problem with @mark-at-pieces then I'll be able to test them and we should have a fix out for you asap!
