Map legends may not be the most popular on web maps, but they offer the opportunity to showcase the rich information held within the vector data being shown.

A floating/sidebar legend could display the currently visible highway shields (via querying the visible roads and determining the shields from there).

Here is an example for querying the rendered features with MapboxGlJS https://docs.mapbox.com/mapbox-gl-js/example/filter-features-within-map-view/
