GitHub REST API for Update branch protection says:

The name of the branch. Cannot contain wildcard characters.

This makes famous apps, such as Repository Settings app to break when using a wildcard and affects many users and organizations alike (I am familiar with 5 organization with more than 200 developers that suffer from the lack of wildcard support in the REST API).

The lack of support for wildcard in the REST API exists for a long time now. Although there is an alternative solution by using GraphQL API, such functionality is not yet supported by many apps.

This is a kind request to end the suffering for many developers by implementing the wildcard in the REST API.
