404 on new gh-pages

I have used gh-pages successfully recently to put up a page, but today when I tried to push changes they simply didn't show up. So I (probably unwisely) deleted that repo and started fresh. I've done the troubleshooting here ()https://docs.github.com/en/pages/getting-started-with-github-pages/troubleshooting-404-errors-for-github-pages-sites) and also removed the origin on my local repo. But I still get a 404.
