Can be used to organize bookmarks, for example, by creating directory for each continent or country. Some users may also hide/unhide subdirectories.

Original request before split is here.

Related request: #4250, #1066, #4765

Can directories be replaced by the smart and easy-to-use tagging system? Are there any real-world examples in other software projects?

Up to me, tagging is more flexible. However, directories may have simpler implementation, and has good mapping to Countries/Regions hierarchy.

As for examples, I cannot recall any Android program with the same approach.

I really like the idea of having something to organize bookmark lists. A good use case is to organize bookmarks in coarse and fine categories: for example, you could have a folder "Food" with lists "Restaurants", "Take away", "Vegan", etc. (or "Tourism", "Accommodation"...). Maybe tags are more flexible in case of overlaps, but directories would already be great.

The way I use the app is prepare bookmarks in Google Earth ahead of time (much more convenient when looking for things to visit) then import the KML into Organic Maps. With a very large POI list you're going to hit performance limits of Google Earth, so you need a way to turn some of them off. Therefore top-level grouping in directories by continent/country comes naturally, since when traveling most of us target a specific country.

It is very important to be able to manage large masses of data in bookmarks.

I have data separated by folders and subfolders in google earth, generated monthly.

all this data falls into a mass grave inside organic.

I have to generate separate files every month from the main file, so that it is possible to enable and disable part of the data, making organic continue to perform well on android.

By reading the structure of folders and subfolders, this work would be avoided, and the use of the app would be more interesting, light and practical.

Looking forward to this implementation.

Congratulations to the organic team!
