No, it depends on Node.vim for detection that the current buffer is a Node.js file, and to set b:node_root and g:node#coreModules.
It actually needs a couple of changes to Node.vim to work properly, which I've done in my local vim config. Go bother @moll at moll/vim-node#5 if you'd like to see those merged :)
