How to add "Tags" as a field choice for a custom object?

When creating fields for a custom object type, how do we allow the custom objects to have tags associated with them?
I can add text fields, and object fields, etc., but how do I allow the custom objects themselves to have tags associated with them?
Is this just something that is coming in a later release?
