Ideally we want the image rendition to be contextually appropriate for the usage, which we think we can do from the parent class and/or grandparent class

Looks like support for this is coming in 5.2 LTS https://docs.wagtail.org/en/latest/releases/5.2.html#responsive-multi-format-images-with-the-picture-tag
