New Projects and Data Review

What is data review?

Data review is simply the process of documenting and justifying user data that is being collected. The Data Stewards are here to provide guidance and structure around doing this.

Why is data review important?

Transparency about data collection is very important to Mozilla, and we want to give users choice and control over their data that is being used.

New projects that collect user data MUST go through data review, so that we can maintain a standard of data collection.

Okay, how do I get started?

When starting a new project, here is a checklist of what needs to happen:

  1. Email fx-datastewards@ mozilla dot com and describe your project, and what sort of usage data you think you will be collecting.
  2. For each bug or issue where you are adding new telemetry probes, also fill out a Data Request Form and include it in a comment of the issue/bug. Flag one of the data stewards to review this. If it matches the data guidelines, the data steward will post a review response document and r+ the request.
  3. With each probe that's added, also add documentation to a public documentation source. This can be an in-tree markup file, or a wiki page on the GitHub repo.

We're also working on improving this process, and removing some of the manual work involved, so data review can be even easier, so let us know if you have feedback and suggestions.
