Markdown cells show extra quotes and ascii rendering of LaTeX

Hello. I’m editing an .ipynb notebook and Markdown cells render with extra leading single and double quotes. Why would that be? Those quotes are not part of the cell contents. In addition, when there are LaTeX formulae in the cell, extra ascii rendering of those formulae are displayed, and make the output confusing. Here is a screenshot to clarify what I mean, with the extra “stuff” circled in red:
