[wsl2] unacceptable git performance after upgrade from wsl1

Environment

Windows build number: Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.19041.329]
Your Distribution version: 18.04
Whether the issue is on WSL 2 and/or WSL 1: WSL 2

Steps to reproduce

1. in a local git repository from a wsl 2 command prompt, enter any command (enter, clearing the output)

Expected behavior

I expect wsl 2 environments to respond immediately to commands (show no lag when entering commands).

Actual behavior

takes at least a full second to update the the output from the previous command.

Clarification

After upgrading an ubuntu installation from wsl 1 to wsl 2, I notice this issue ONLY in git repos. I have searched and found a few references to what may be the same issue or related:

• do_you_like_using_wsl2_but_hate_how_slow_git_runs
• [wsl2] filesystem performance is much slower than wsl1 in /mnt
• git status is slow in WSL2
