Explorer Context Menu Organizer #31721
Comments
/dup #33 |
Hi! We've identified this issue as a duplicate of another one that already exists on this Issue Tracker. This specific instance is being closed in favor of tracking the concern over on the referenced thread. Thanks for your report! |
Not really a duplicate. But definitely related. The /33 is way older, way more generic and has so much input (and no dev action) that it's really no longer relevant. |
There are several old issue with lots of history, discussions, and context. Frequently they are still open because the issue is challenging, or there are other issues with doing the work here in PowerToys, (security, undocumented apis, unstable experience, etc.). Please provide your own comment and support to the discussion there. #33 is more general but absolutely covers this issue, especially as a first implementation. |
Description of the new feature / enhancement
Prelude
With more and more features and apps joining the Explorer Context Menu as items and collections of items, the need for pivotal monitors makes much more sense. However, I like my monitors in landscape mode. Thus I need less visible items.
Windows 11 cleans like a politician
Windows 11 handled this problem like politicians do with problems, sweep them under the carpet. The carpet is really just a metaphore of the 2nd level context menu (equals the classic one). To access items "under the carpet", click "Show more..".
This lead users to do one more click before they could access their favourite feature, such as: "Adobe Acrobat Merge Files", "7-zip -actions-", "Scan for threats in AV", "Open with.." etc. etc.
The suggestion
This is a suggestion to allow the re-organization of the Context Menu Items with a brand new PowerToy "Context Menu Organizer". With this tool, the user sees all possible context menu items in one view. Even those for individual file types only (like PDF, ZIP, etc). Now you can select items and "Push down" (under the carpet) or "Push to top" (visible in the Win11 style context menu on first right-click. Also options to remove entire actions (from 3rd party applications) is there, and allows to clean up when you really only need ONE action from WinRAR or 7ZIP - and could remove the remaining THREE.
The reward
IT pro's using this new feature instantly burst into tears, thanking the good developers at PowerToys and start prompting ChatGPT on best ways to show their appreciation of this new feature. Managers at Microsoft start snapping their fingers and the tax return tickets start flooding in. All good things come to those who develop this new feature. Or at least so I've heard. No guarantees given.
Scenario when this would be used?
Adding control over context menu items will ensure less clicks needed - and less clutter in the menu items. And eliminate the need of going to the "classic" context menu to find items.
