as mentioned on Slack, think this is solved by updating node past 12.20.0 - likely it was the issue fixed in nodejs/node#35661 . Can't update this far with apt so see https://askubuntu.com/questions/426750/how-can-i-update-my-nodejs-to-the-latest-version
