The code looks good, I'm just unsure why we do this and whether it is The Right Thing To Do?

I am not sure if I am understand the question.
To this line? Or why proxy authentication for http proxy?
Or why connect via tunnel?

Ok. It is my fault. I thought it is necessary. I have read RFC and a lot of pages. It is not. Http and authentication do not need a tunnel. I will do an update.
