The Welcome and Overview page is the first page that people see when they visit Synapse's documentation website. At the moment it's fairly bare. We received some feedback from the community on the content one might expect to see there, and I largely agree.

From Nicolas Guichard in #synapse:matrix.org, it would be nice to see:

  • something that explains a bit more what Synapse is and what it's not, to know if I should continue reading or not
  • big buttons to the most important sections of the documentation (install, configure, admin, contribute)
  • and/or something like the following to fill up the Space™?

Matrix software map

@dklimpel Thanks for linking these two issues.

I think the welcome page is now no longer empty and this issue can be closed. However, to address the first bullet point in the OP, we could probably do a with a "What is a Matrix homeserver?" page under the Introduction section for people who are completely new to Matrix. It could also include the above image, and we could have a link to it in the first paragraph of the Welcome page.

But otherwise, I think the Welcome page in its current form is good enough as a starting point.
