Maybe we could only download the file whenever a person opens the link.

or we could generate a URL, post that to the user and - in the background - download the file. When the user clicks on the URL the server waits responding until we downloaded the file.

It might be worth noting that currently we do download up to 50 files at the same time, so if somebody bombards you with a collage of pictures, it should download fairly quickly.
