Environment

Joplin version: 1.0.233 (prod,linux)
Platform: Arch 5.7.12-arch1-1 x86_64
OS specifics:

Steps to reproduce

  1. Sometime the app will launch and sometimes it won't. This happens whether I launch it either from CLI or the menu icon. joplin in CLI seems to launch fine.
  2. When it DOES launch, the entire window is white. The only thing that shows up is the menu toolbar. But none of the menus work/function. They do nothing. I have to kill the window using xkill
  3. I did find that if I open up either the CLI joplin-desktop or the menu joplin (to initiate the app)...THEN if I launch the app using
    the other method, it will launch and seems to work fine.

Describe what you expected to happen

I was one of the ones that initially submitted the Linux freezing bug #3114... I don't know why I'm having so many problems with this app???

I just put it off and decided to try joplin again today after all this time since the above closed bug, and again I'm having this issue. I don't know if it could possibly be related to issue 3114 or something else?

I looked at 3114 again and it was closed and said to fix, you just turn off web-clipper? My web-clipper was disabled by default already...

Logfile

I don't really see anything in the console when the app does open..

Here's a tailed log of the failed app opening. In this log, the app failed to open all together, and I tailed the /home/fred/.config/joplin-desktop/log.txt and this was all the output: https://pastebin.com/V6ksbAMn

Is this the debug log?

Thank you!

I have the same problem here. I'm running the exact same version, but on Debian (kernel 4.19).

I do not have this issue on Ubuntu 20.04 but on a Debian 10 system. This is quite strange because Joplin worked for at least two days and then, all of the sudden, showed this strange behaviour.
Is there a good way to get some logging output from the application?

I found what caused the problem on my machine: RocketChat/Rocket.Chat.Electron#676 (comment)
@JackGruber thanks for the tip.

@eugenwintersberger

I do not think that this is the problem in my case since my /tmp is executable (bad enough) and I still do not understand why it worked for two days and then stopped.
Suprisingly I can run the application with npm start from its project directory. I will give the logging a try.

@eugenwintersberger
Copy link

Ok. It is working again. The solution was to not only delete the ~/.config/Joplin directory but also the ~/.config/joplin-desktop directory. I suspect that due to whatever error the configuration data got corrupted causing the application to refuse to start.

Yikes, just happened to me on both PC and Laptop with the latest update of Win 10. Had moved from Evernote about a week ago and really liked Joplin. I had avoided the Beta issues since not willing to take risks but looks like I accidentally got it?

According to the Properties of Joplin.exe, its version 1.4.19.2549 was modified 12/1/2010 at 3:28 AM and that caused a blank white screen other than the tab across the top of Joplin but none of the tabs works so can not get to anything.

Update: I went back to version .16 and works. I didn't uninstall old but seems to work by overwriting the bad .19 latest version.

Is the installation in a default location or custom? portable or normal? i found that when i used a portable installation it created this problem due to i think right access or miss matched locations in the program. please try to put the installation in a default location and see if this helps

@davephx

davephx commented Dec 3, 2020

Yes, it is in the default location c:/Program Files/. Normal, not portable. I don't get out of memory error like gfrein, just the blank white screen that is not responsive. Same on two systems only with latest update till went back to .16 which works.

Update: Well, now on my PC 1.4.19 is working again - had not gone back to .16 that I did on Laptop.
I had rebooted a few times since got just white screen. May try to update on lap again to .19.
I note on PC says: Joplin 1.4.19 (prod, win32)

I am not a tech although go back to IBM OS/2 and card readers but I thought if Win 32 should be in the x 86 directory vs just programs. Computer latest Win10 is 64 bit but also runs 32 bit. Assume that isn't an issue.

@MarcusChamberlain

I've noticed the same issue in Windows 10 using 1.4.19. A workaround I've found that if I maximize/fullscreen Joplin, that forces it to re-render and everything snaps back into view. Not sure if the same trick works in Linux.

davephx commented Dec 14, 2020

Well, after a reboot I have not had the blank white screen again on PC, and on a laptop just started working fine again. If happens again will try to change the size. I believe I went a few times from minimizing to the max and didn't solve. But then magically haven't had the issue again so it's very intermittent. I reinstalled the latest update after going back to old. Bottom line all seems well at least for now for me.

@ncatanchin

I've had a variety of "white screen" issues over the past few months - using Windows.

Previously the fix was exactly as @MarcusChamberlain advised:

I've noticed the same issue in Windows 10 using 1.4.19. A workaround I've found that if I maximize/fullscreen Joplin, that forces it to re-render and everything snaps back into view. Not sure if the same trick works in Linux.

More recent versions, that "fix" stopped working - a slightly different approach is needed:

  • minimize joplin - i have it minimizing to systray
  • reopen joplin - still white
  • maximum joplin - back in business

On Windows, also having "white screen" issues.

I got it to work by re-installing using "only for me" instead of "for all users" in the install options in Windows 10

I forgot too mention, but what worked for me is to delete the .config folder from Joplin that worked like a charm

A big word of warning for anyone who might try this, the .config/joplin-desktop folder contains your profile data (i.e. your notes, settings, resources etc.) so unless you are sure you have your data backed up then don't just delete this without understanding what you are doing.

Experiencing this on Pop OS 22.04, Gnome v42.1

Edit: I only had to update my client, and my issue was solved.

Closing this issue after a prolonged period of inactivity. If this issue is still present in the latest release, feel free to create a new issue with up-to-date information.

@tihomir-kit

This is still an issue. It's just annoying that the bot is set to too short and to have to reopen so frequently. I understand that this is an open-source project but auto-closing issues so aggressively with a bot won't make them magically go away. If it stayed open, you'd at least have a realistic oversight of existing issues.

Can confirm on Fedora 36 + Gnome 42.4 (Wayland), removing .config/joplin-desktop helps, but after I bring back all my settings it starts to crash again

This issue just occurred to me on Windows 10 for the first time. Completely blank screen, closing and opening it do nothing. I tried maximizing it and then making it regular size, and then it worked again.

I had the same issue with Joplin 2.9.17 on windows 10. Maximizing the window and then going back to normal size worked for me too.

This just happened to me on Ubuntu 22.04 with Joplin 2.9.17 installed from snap.

It opens a blank screen whenever I open the desktop client.
Then, if I minimize and open it from the tray icon (need to enable minimizing to tray first), it works fine.

Not sure this is related but this is logged when I open it from the terminal:

Error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Failed: cannot set "default-url-scheme-handler" subproperty "joplin" setting to invalid value "@joplin/app-desktop.desktop"

I had the same problem with white screen after updating to 2.11.11 on Windows 11
I got it to work again by uninstalling the normal version.

Download the Portable version.
Running it once to generate the Profile folder
Exiting the application from the taskbar.
Copying the the contents of the C:\Users_USERNAME_.config\joplin-desktop\ to the New Profile folder created by the portable version.
Delete all the plugins files from the tmp, cache, plugin, plugin-data folders.

The program now runs normally and all notes are available in the portable version.
Didn't try to install the normal version again(lazy).

Hope this helps some ppl.
