Description of problem

I followed the documentation in https://github.com/kata-containers/documentation/blob/master/install/ubuntu-installation-guide.md to install Kubernetes with containerd and kata in Ubuntu 20.04, run in VirtualBox as VM. When runc is used as default runtime everything works fine and Kubernetes Master is up. When I change the runtime to kata-runtime by editing /etc/containerd/config.toml and start the init process with kubeadm by the command

sudo kubeadm init --cri-socket unix:///run/containerd/containerd.sock --pod-network-cidr=10.244.0.0/16 --apiserver-advertise-address=10.0.2.4

Kubernetes control plane pods do not start. They keep restarting and destroyed in 2 minutes periods. As kube-apiserver is never reachable I cannot diagnose problems with kubectl command. For installation, I followed the following steps:

sudo hostnamectl set-hostname kata-master && sudo apt-get install -y apt-transport-https ca-certificates curl gnupg-agent software-properties-common vim

ARCH=$(arch) && BRANCH="${BRANCH:-master}" && sudo sh -c "echo 'deb http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/katacontainers:/releases:/${ARCH}:/${BRANCH}/xUbuntu_$(lsb_release -rs)/ /' > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/kata-containers.list" && curl -sL http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/katacontainers:/releases:/${ARCH}:/${BRANCH}/xUbuntu_$(lsb_release -rs)/Release.key | sudo apt-key add - && sudo -E apt-get update && sudo -E apt-get -y install kata-runtime kata-proxy kata-shim

Enable kernel modules

sudo modprobe overlay

mkdir -p $HOME/.kubesudo
cp -i /etc/kubernetes/admin.conf $HOME/.kube/config,
sudo chown $(id -u):$(id -g) $HOME/.kube/config

I can run kata pods and containers with crictl without any problems. ı can see that they have different kernels as compared to host's. But Kubernetes control plane pods do not start.

Expected result

Kubernetes control plane pods and the Kubernetes itself should be up and running when run with kata-runtime.

Actual result

Kubernetes control plane pods keeps restarting but they are never reachable when run with kata-runtime.
