When running applications on Linux using Flatpak or other containerisation systems, they lack direct hardware access (ie: USB), and can only request access to system services via D-Bus.
xdg-credentials-portal solves this by specifying a platform API over D-Bus which allows them to communicate with an authenticator, similar to what Windows 10's WebAuthn API does.
