k3d cluster create merging config with ~/.kube/config

Is it possible to get "k3d cluster create" to merge the new config into the current Kubernetes config file? It seems to clobber the config file by default,

Hi @mwoodpatrick , thanks for starting this discussion.
I'm a bit unsure what you're aiming for?
By default, k3d writes into your current default Kubeconfig, which is either defined by the KUBECONFIG env var or it is $HOME/.kube/config.
You can disable this with k3d cluster create --kubeconfig-update-default=false and the use K3d kubeconfig command to handle it manually.

It seems like k3d is overwriting my default Kubeconfig, rather than merging the newly created cluster into the file

That would be very wrong indeed.
Did you check the KUBECONFIG file?
Can you give some debug or better trace logs of your cluster create command?
