I designed and synthesized a functional and FPGA-deployable RISC-V 2-stage pipelined processor architecture using Verilog HDL on the Quartus Intel Prime EDA suite. The initial specification was to develop a single-cycle processor operating at a nominal frequency of 50MHz, capable of executing a program that computed the factorial of 6 (n-factorial, where n=6) with a Cycles Per Instruction (CPI) of 1, resulting in a runtime of 1440 nanoseconds (20 ns x 72 cycles).

In my first attempt, I could push my frequency to 100MHz, far exceeding the requirements. Following new spec requirements for a pipelined design, my benchmark was to hit a 15-20% improvement in runtime. I analyzed the spec requirements and my design and found that I could get away with a 2-stage pipeline, reducing the number of required cycles at the tradeoff of a lower clock frequency since 100MHz was already high. Post-implementation of the 2-stage pipeline and logic optimization, as well as synthesis and place-and-route, I achieved a significant performance enhancement. The optimized processor attained a maximum operating frequency of 145MHz, a 190% increase in clock speed compared to the initial design specification. This optimization translated to a runtime of 572 nanoseconds (6.896 ns x 83 cycles), a 60.3% improvement over the original design.

I had a slight increase in used cycles since I made the design choice to use hardware stalls on jal or jalr instructions on a 2-stage pipeline while still hitting the required specs. Through critical path analysis, I identified potential for further performance improvement by pipelining the processor into 3 stages and pipelining the multiplier unit within the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU), as the multiply operation exhibited the longest propagation delay.

Attained a 1.26x speed-up over the single-cycle design baseline.

Achieved a 2.52x speed-up compared to the target performance specification.

Ranked 2nd for runtime performance, (7% slower than the 1st place design).

I cannot provide a GitHub link since my code would give hints to current students

Frustrated by the time-consuming process of reading lengthy tech newsletters during my busy morning routine, I developed TIDAL Bot - a solution that automates the extraction of relevant article URLs, scrapes the content, and uses AI-powered natural language processing to deliver concise text summaries directly to my phone. This allows me to quickly grasp the key details of the latest tech news without being bogged down by unnecessary information, while still having the option to refer back to the full articles if needed. I've included a diagram outlining the tradeoffs and design choices involved, and as an ongoing project, I'll continue to refine the system. If there's sufficient interest, I'm open to scaling TIDAL Bot to accommodate a wider user base.

After being accepted into Brown University's premier summer
start-up accelerator, I had the fortune to experience the many
ups and downs of running a lean start-up.

The idea of Freedays was to help college students quit vaping.

On the technical side of things, I initially built a hardware
breadboard prototype that would, throughout the day, disable
the vape. It was essentially an ESP32 DevKit C wired to a
disposable vape that interrupted the voltage supply to the
atomizer based on the time of day. Following technical
breakthroughs and legal regulations, we pivoted to software
were I developed the MVP to our "mobile AI therapist" which
utilized an API call to chat-gpt-3.5-turbo.

My biggest takeaway was the opportunity to learn new skills
and produce on the fly. I learned everything from start-up
legal, customer validation, bottom-up research, business
finance, and how to adapt.

What I found most exciting was making my build-measure-learn
feedback loop as fast as possible. I learned that the best way
to build a new product is to understand your assumptions, and
vigorously test them as fast as possible.
