fsrip Build Steps
Platforms
---------
fsrip can build on Linux, MacOS X, and Windows. It should be noted that
Windows builds are a huge pain in the ass; stock up on beer and nachos.
Tooling
-------
fsrip depends on gcc (MinGW on Windows) and the SCons build tool
(v2), which in turn requires Python. Some relevant links are:

Libraries
---------
BOOST
fsrip uses the Boost collection of C++ libraries. In
addition to many of the header-only libraries, fsrip relies on the
program_options libraries having been built and available by default to gcc.

Boost on Windows
To build Boost on Windows, try the following (assuming that you've unzipped
boost to C:\boost):
C:\> cd boost
C:\boost\> .\bootstrap.bat # builds boost's jam build tool
C:\boost\> .\bjam --stagedir=C:\lib --with-program_options link=static
runtime-link=static variant=release threading=multi
toolset=gcc address-model=[32|64]

You may also want to use the '--layout=system' option, or you can make copies
of the libraries that remove version and build information from their
filenames. This will build the requisite libraries and place them in C:\lib
(or wherever you choose to put the libs), but will avoid copying all the
header files into a new place (as the bjam 'install' command does). Use
shared or static link modes as appropriate.
Otherwise, check out the boostType option below. If you get a message that the
Boost program_options library can't be found and you're _certain_ it's there
and findable, you probably need to use boostType.
THE SLEUTHKIT
fsrip uses The Sleuthkit's libtsk3 to do the heavy lifting, so you will need
to download and build The Sleuthkit:

Of note is that The Sleuthkit can optionally make use of afflib and libewf to
read AFF and EWF/E01 evidence files, respectively. We recommend you download
both libraries and install them first. If they are found on the system, scons
will link against them. It should also be noted that afflib has a number of
dependencies, so please read through its build procedures carefully.

ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES
If you do not want to have these dependencies installed in standard system
locations, you may want to avail yourself of the following environment
variables:
CPATH # gcc: list of dirs to be searched for header files
LIBRARY_PATH # gcc: list of dirs to be searched for libraries
LD_LIBRARY_PATH # ld: list of dirs containing so libs for run-time
For example, if you used "./configure --prefix=$HOME" when building the
dependencies, you could set the variables in .bashrc as follows:
export CPATH=~/include
export LIBRARY_PATH=~/lib
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=~/lib
Scons Options
-------------
On a Unix-based OS, we recommend using the '-j n', to specify the use of 'n'
parallel build tasks. This probably won't work so well on Windows, as, y'know,
Windows sucks.
'boostType="foo"' will append foo onto the end of any Boost libraries, to
help with finding your desired variant (e.g., "-mt",
"-mgw44-mt-s-1_46_1")
