Official Ansible Documentation states when writing new inventory scripts:

Inventory scripts must accept the --list and --host arguments, other arguments are allowed but Ansible will not use them.

This is one of those let's follow the standard and add this feature to this script.

Jeff Geerling has a pretty good example on the actual implementation via his Github Repository
