Having updated node-red and node a while back I found that the built-in dependency on 6.1.1 of serialport caused the installation to fail on my RPi.

Manually installing serialport (globally) via npm, downloading this package and removing the entire dependecies section ftom the package.json and manually installing restored functionality as before.
