Not working with symbols #17

This script only seems to work with top level layers – i.e. a basic setup like the image below doesn't export anything.

I narrowed this issue down to the script not working with symbols.

All of those named layers in the previous post are symbols. If I break the symbol link, it works – otherwise it doesn't.
