what does that have to do with #2? is that where the issue is happening? If so that simplifies this a great deal

also, what do you mean by "move badges to shields.io"? wouldn't they still need to be templates? how would we automatically generate them with the necessary variables?

edit: oh, or do you just mean "standardize the badges to use shields.io"? I'm on board with that either way. I just haven't had time to do it. I thought I created a helper for this, but I can't find it.
