Keynote Speech -- Build or Buy: Evolving Enterprise Integration Models
Presented by Jim Schraith, Vice President & General Manager of North America for Compaq.

The answer to Enterprise Solutions of yesteryear was -- BUILD. Build the applications from
scratch and maintain the code as long as you can to recover the development costs. The model
of the past was based on building complex and costly business applications based on single-vendor solutions.

The model is changing. The answer to Enterprise Solutions of today and into the millenium is
-- BUY. The new and evolving Enterprise Integration Model requires developing partnerships with
stong industry vendors that understand and are committed to this new model. Off-the-shelf integration
that provides cost-effective, highly scalable, fault tolerant solutions for mission-critical applications.

Jim Schraith will help you gain insight into the new industry dynamics of this decade. Understanding
and adopting this new model can propel you to success as you design and implement technologies
to support your changing business environment.

Becoming a Compaq ASE establishes a partnership
between the ASE and Compaq. Upon accreditation as an ASE, the
Systems Engineer automatically begins receiving essential tools
and support, some of which are not available to System Engineers
who are not ASEs. Additionally, as a reward for the hard work
and efforts of becoming a Compaq ASE, Compaq provides many benefits
to these individuals such as discounts and incentives for training
and engineering events, product discounts, free subscriptions,
etc. Benefits provided as part of the Compaq ASE Program are geared
towards helping both the ASE as well as the employer. Following
is a description of some of the benefits provided as part of the
ASE Program.

(Available to ASEs and Associate ASEs)
The amount of information available to
Compaq ASEs and Associate ASEs is endless. All ASEs automatically
receive, at no charge, access to every technical tool and subscription
available from Compaq. This ensures that along with their training,
Compaq ASEs are equipped with the latest information, support
tools, and software to successfully plan, install, troubleshoot,
integrate and optimize Compaq solutions. Upon accreditation, ASEs
receive a Welcome Kit to help them understand and fully utilize
these resources from Compaq. After that, ASEs receive monthly
subscription mailings from Compaq to ensure they have the latest
information and tools available.

Once accredited, Compaq ASEs and Associate ASEs have toll-free
access to an exclusive Compaq ASE Forum. The
purpose of this forum is to enable ASEs to share information and
leverage the expertise of other Compaq ASEs from around the world.
Additionally, ASEs may dial into Compaq's
technical databases 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, free of charge.
ASEs also receive a quarterly
ASE Newsletter containing information about upcoming events
and the ASE Program.

(Available to ASEs)
Because of their extensive training on
Compaq hardware and operating system integration, Compaq ASEs
receive a free subscription to Compaq SmartStart -- the intelligent
CD-based process that integrates hardware configurations and software
installations into a single, streamlined process. Additionally,
ASEs are privileged to free, priority access to Compaq technical
support reducing hold times to a minimum.

(Available to ASEs and Associate ASEs)
To ensure that Compaq ASEs are properly
trained and maintain the expertise to perform as expected, periodic
training is provided as well as private, non-disclosure events
where ASEs can learn about upcoming Compaq products and technologies.
Annually, ASEs are invited to the Compaq Systems Engineering conference
where they attend break-outs and have a chance to speak directly
with the top experts at Compaq. Priority registration, discounts,
and incentives are provided to ASEs for most events.

(Available to Associate ASEs and ASEs)
Advertising materials are provided to
ASEs to gain them immediate recognition as a member of a worldwide
team of highly trained Compaq Systems Engineers. These materials
include use of the ASE logo for stationery and business cards,
ASE brochures, and ASE catalog items including clothing and business
accessories.

(Available to ASEs)
In return for their effort in becoming
a Compaq ASE, ASEs receive special discounts on select Compaq
products through a Compaq ASE Product Purchase Plan.

The Compaq ASE is considered an advanced level accreditation
of the ASE Program. ASEs have successfully demonstrated their
knowledge and expertise in the integration of Compaq hardware

To ensure that Compaq ASEs have the knowledge and expertise to perform at their best with Compaq platforms, periodic maintenance training is required by Compaq. The amount of maintenance training required throughout a year depends solely on Compaq product announcements, and whether Compaq determines that the new product training requires additional technical or presales training. ASEs are required to complete all these requirements to maintain their ASE accreditation.

The ASE is expected to complete the requirements within the amount of time specified by Compaq. This grace period may vary depending upon the requirement. Additionally, renewing ASEs are required to submit an ASE Application to Compaq regardless of whether there has been any maintenance training required during the previous year. Prior to their renewal date, ASEs will be sent a letter reminding them to submit an application. Failure to comply with the maintenance requirements of the ASE Program within the specified period of time will result in deaccreditation of the ASE.

Microsoft® Internet Explorer 4.0 Provided by Compaq Important Notes for Home Base Users

Some Compaq Presario computers offer users a program
called Home Base that, like Internet Explorer 4.0, is designed to make the computer more
customizable for individual users. Home Base users should read this page for special information
 before downloading Internet Explorer 4.0.

Internet Explorer 4.0 offers customization of the desktop interface through the
Active Desktop. When it is installed on a Compaq Presario with Home Base,
 there is an initial conflict.

To remove this conflict, Compaq has provided a program that disables the
Home Base shell. If your computer appears on this list, you should run
this Prepare Your Computer program before installing Internet Explorer
4.0. If you don't run the Prepare Your Computer program before you install
Internet Explorer 4.0, your computer may not function properly.

If you're using one of the computers listed
and run the Prepare Your Computer program, the program makes
 these changes to your computer:

Home Base is removed from your computer. Pressing the
SmartQ button no longer opens Home Base, and Home Base
doesn't start up when you start your computer.

You can't switch among multiple users through Home
Base. However, you can switch among users by using the Windows
login feature. To change users, click on Start, then on
Log off.... Windows closes all open programs and prompts
 you to log in.

You can't open the Help Center through Home Base. To open
the Help Center, click on Start, then on Run,
then enter the following line in the Run dialog box:
 c:\compaq\help\cpqhelp.exe

Important: If you don't want Home Base removed from your computer, you should wait for the next
release of Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by Compaq. This version, which will be available soon, will
correct the conflict with Home Base, and you'll be able to install Internet Explorer
and keep Home Base on your computer.

To download Internet Explorer 4.0 now, follow these instructions.

Click on the Prepare Your Computer button below to remove Home
Base from your computer. In the dialog box that appears, be sure to
choose the Open option to run the program from the Web.

After you've prepared your computer, proceed with the download by clicking on the
 Download button below.

Important: In the event that your computer doesn't restart properly
after the Internet Explorer 4.0 installation program prompts you to shut down,
you should turn your computer's power switch OFF. Wait 10
seconds, then turn your computer on to complete your installation successfully.

Microsoft® Internet Explorer 4.0 Provided by Compaq Download Instructions

It's easy! Just follow these simple, step-by-step instructions to download and install Internet Explorer 4.0

Note: We recommend printing these instructions for future
reference before installing Internet Explorer 4.0. And be sure to review the
 Installation notes before you start.

Click on the Download button to the left to run setup.

In the first dialog box, choose either Save As to save
the setup files on your hard drive or Open File to open the
 setup files directly.

If you choose Open File, Internet Explorer setup
begins automatically, and you remain connected to the Internet
while the setup program downloads the necessary files, then
 installs and configures Internet Explorer.

If you chose Save As, select the location on your
hard disk where you want to save the Internet Explorer setup files.
After the setup files have been saved to your hard drive, and
while you're still connected to the Internet, run setup by
double-clicking on the ie4setup.exe file in Windows Explorer.

In the first setup dialog box, select which package of Internet
Explorer 4.0 Suite components you want to download. You can choose
from the following Internet Explorer 4.0 Suite component packages:

Minimal: Includes Internet Explorer 4.0, Java Support,
 and Microsoft Internet Connection Wizard.

Standard: To the Minimal installation we add Microsoft
 OutLook Express and Microsoft Wallet.

Full: To the Standard installation we add NetMeeting,
NetShow, FrontPage Express, Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard, and
 Microsoft Chat 2.0.

Note: All of these packages include the Compaq customizations
described previously. Be sure to allow enough disk space for your chosen
 package; see the system requirements.

Restart your computer after the setup program ends.

Important: In the event that your computer doesn't restart properly
after the Internet Explorer 4.0 installation program prompts you to shut down,
you should turn your computer's power switch OFF. Wait 10
seconds, then turn your computer on to complete your installation successfully.

If your computer stops responding during installation, restart the computer.
Internet Explorer 4.0 will complete the installation when your computer restarts.

If you have installed a version of Internet Explorer 4.0 previously and are not
using a Web page as your background, the Presario Planet Active Desktop
wallpaper won't be set up during this installation. After the installation ends,
click on Start. Point to Settings, then to Active Desktop,
then to Customize my Desktop. On the Background tab, select
the Oct97 file from the list of wallpapers. Click on OK to set up the Presario
 Planet wallpaper.

HUOMAUTUS: USB-liittimet ovat vain
 tietyiss malleissa.

USB
(Universal Serial Bus) on tietokone- ja
 tietoliikenneteollisuuden kehittm oheislaitteiden
 vylstandardi. USB-standardi mahdollistaa
 oheislaitteiden liittmisen tietokoneeseen
 "lennossa" ilman uudelleenkynnistyst tai
 jrjestelmn kokoonpanon uudelleenmrityst.
USB-laitteet konfiguroidaan automaattisesti heti kun ne
on fyysisesti liitetty. Presariossa on kaksi
USB-liitint. Voit lisksi kytke USB-laitteita yhteen
ketjuksi, jolloin voit liitt tietokoneeseen enemmm
 kuin kaksi USB-laitetta.
BIOS tulee sanoista "Basic Input and Output
System". Se on sarja ohjeita, jotka kynnistvt
 tietokoneen vlittmsti virran kytkemisen jlkeen.
BIOS-koodi on kirjoitettu kiintolevylle tai emokortin
 erityiseen ROM-lukumuistipiiriin. Tietokoneen
kynnistmisen jlkeen BIOS lataa tietokoneen kyttjrjestelmn (Windows) RAM-muistiin niin
 ett voit kytt tietokonetta.

BIOSia ei pid sekoittaa kyttjrjestelmn,
 esim. Windows 95. Suurimmat
erot BIOSin ja kyttjrjestelmn vlill ovat
 seuraavat:

BIOS lataa ja ajaa Windowsia, kun taas Windows
 lataa ja ajaa ohjelmia.

Toimit jatkuvasti Windowsin kanssa avaamalla
 ohjelmia, asentamalla laitteia ja ohjelmistoja
 sek muuttamalla asetuksia
 Windows-ohjauspaneelista. Sit vastoin
 useimmilla kyttjill on vhn tekemist
BIOSin kanssa ja he trmvt siihen vain kun
 on muutettava kokoonpanon asetuksia tietokoneen
 asetusohjelmasta.
Kyttjrjestelm on ohjelmisto, joka ohjaa
 tietokonetta ja siihen kytkettyj oheislaitteita.
 Kyttjrjestelm kertoo tietokoneelle, kuinka
ohjelmia kytetn ja se hallitsee tietokoneeseen
asennettua laitteistoa, sek sisist ett ulkoista.

Kyttjrjestelm voi olla merkkipohjainen tai
 graafinen. Merkkipohjainen kyttjrjestelm kuten
 MS-DOS sallii komentojen kirjoittamisen kehotteeseen
 tietokoneen ohjaamiseksi. Graafinen kyttliittym
(Graphical User Interface, GUI) sallii komentojen
 lhettmisen tietokoneelle napsauttamalla kuvaketta tai
valitsemalla nimikkeet valikoista. Windows 95:ss on
 graafinen kyttliittym.

Useimmat kyttjrjestelmt voivat ksitell
joko 16-bittisi tai 32-bittisi ohjelmia tai molempia.
Microsoft Windows 3.x voi ajaa vain 16-bittisi
ohjelmia; Microsoft Windows 95 voi ajaa sek 16-bittisi ett 32-bittisi
 ohjelmia.

Synchronous DRAM, commonly known as SyncDRAM, is the latest type of PC memory architecture. This provides a significant performance improvement over conventional Fast Page Mode (FPM) or Extended Data Output (EDO)1. A key difference found in SyncDRAM is that it is synchronized to the system clock signal, which means that all operations run at the same speed as the processor bus, i.e., 60 or 66MHz. This is compared to conventional memory architectures which run asynchronously to the processor bus. Due to this synchronization, data bits are retrieved faster and thereby increase system performance.

PC applications commonly access DRAM data in 4-quad word (Qword) burst lengths. Optimum system performance is achieved when data is fed to the processor on par with the system clock. Data access from an L2 cache comes close to meeting this requirement as typical when only one or two wait states are inserted while accessing the first data. The remaining three Qwords are delivered on a par with the processor speed, denoted as a 2/1/1/1 burst rate. When, however, the requested data must come directly from DRAM, the burst rate is degraded. Assuming the burst is from a DRAM page that is already open (page hit), the achievable burst rate at 66MHz using 60ns FPM DRAMs is 5/3/3/3 cycles; for EDO DRAMs it is 6/2/2/2. SyncDRAMs can reduce burst rates to 7/1/1/1 for L2 cache misses. While SyncDRAM takes more time to locate the first data bit, it then is faster at retrieving the next three Qwords. Furthermore, it really excels at back-to-back reads, as noted in the following comparison which assumes a page hit:

Tests employing the Winstone 32 system level benchmark show SyncDRAM-based systems outperforming comparable EDO-based systems by about 15% for configurations without an L2 cache. Even in systems equipped with a 512K cache, SyncDRAM provides a performance benefit of 5%. These results confirm that consumers will benefit from a performance increase in any application when using a SyncDRAM-based system.

(Available to ASEs and Associate ASEs)
The amount of information available to
Compaq ASEs and Associate ASEs is endless. All ASEs automatically
receive, at no charge, access to every technical tool and subscription
available from Compaq. This ensures that along with their training,
Compaq ASEs are equipped with the latest information, support
tools, and software to successfully plan, install, troubleshoot,
integrate and optimize Compaq solutions. Upon accreditation, ASEs
receive a Welcome Kit to help them understand and fully utilize

In return for their effort in becoming
a Compaq ASE, ASEs receive special discounts on select Compaq
products through a Compaq ASE Product Purchase Plan.

of the ASE Program.

Preparing for ASE Tests

To assist ASE candidates in passing the tests required
by the ASE Program, Compaq provides the following support:

1. Compaq Training

The highest recommended method of preparing for the
Compaq ASE tests is by attending Compaq training. ASE Training
information can be found in the Compaq Training Information Catalog. Also available are the list of the courses available and the schedule and registration information.

2. Compaq ASE Self-Assessment
Guides

Compaq ASE Self-Assessment Guides provide topics and test information to help ASE candidates determine whether they have the requisite knowledge required to successfully pass
the ASE Program tests. ASE candidates should be careful to review
the Self-Assessment Guide specific to the test they are taking
and, if applicable, the matching operating system platform of
choice. These Self-Assessment Guides are also available via fax from
Compaq PaqFax at (800) 345-1518. See the Compaq Training Information
Catalog to obtain the document number for the appropriate
ASE Self-Assessment Guide.

System". Se on sarja ohjeita, jotka kynnistvt
 tietokoneen vlittmsti virran kytkemisen jlkeen.
BIOS-koodi on kirjoitettu kiintolevylle tai emokortin
 erityiseen ROM-lukumuistipiiriin. Tietokoneen
kynnistmisen jlkeen BIOS lataa tietokoneen kyttjrjestelmn (Windows) RAM-muistiin niin
 ett voit kytt tietokonetta.

BIOSia ei pid sekoittaa kyttjrjestelmn,
 esim. Windows 95. Suurimmat
erot BIOSin ja kyttjrjestelmn vlill ovat
 seuraavat:

BIOS lataa ja ajaa Windowsia, kun taas Windows
 lataa ja ajaa ohjelmia.

Toimit jatkuvasti Windowsin kanssa avaamalla
 ohjelmia, asentamalla laitteia ja ohjelmistoja
 sek muuttamalla asetuksia
 Windows-ohjauspaneelista. Sit vastoin
 useimmilla kyttjill on vhn tekemist
BIOSin kanssa ja he trmvt siihen vain kun
 on muutettava kokoonpanon asetuksia tietokoneen
 asetusohjelmasta.
Kyttjrjestelm on ohjelmisto, joka ohjaa
 tietokonetta ja siihen kytkettyj oheislaitteita.
 Kyttjrjestelm kertoo tietokoneelle, kuinka
ohjelmia kytetn ja se hallitsee tietokoneeseen
asennettua laitteistoa, sek sisist ett ulkoista.

Kyttjrjestelm voi olla merkkipohjainen tai
 graafinen. Merkkipohjainen kyttjrjestelm kuten
 MS-DOS sallii komentojen kirjoittamisen kehotteeseen
 tietokoneen ohjaamiseksi. Graafinen kyttliittym
(Graphical User Interface, GUI) sallii komentojen
 lhettmisen tietokoneelle napsauttamalla kuvaketta tai
valitsemalla nimikkeet valikoista. Windows 95:ss on
 graafinen kyttliittym.

Useimmat kyttjrjestelmt voivat ksitell
joko 16-bittisi tai 32-bittisi ohjelmia tai molempia.
Microsoft Windows 3.x voi ajaa vain 16-bittisi
ohjelmia; Microsoft Windows 95 voi ajaa sek 16-bittisi ett 32-bittisi
 ohjelmia.

Synchronous DRAM, commonly known as SyncDRAM, is the latest type of PC memory architecture. This provides a significant performance improvement over conventional Fast Page Mode (FPM) or Extended Data Output (EDO)1. A key difference found in SyncDRAM is that it is synchronized to the system clock signal, which means that all operations run at the same speed as the processor bus, i.e., 60 or 66MHz. This is compared to conventional memory architectures which run asynchronously to the processor bus. Due to this synchronization, data bits are retrieved faster and thereby increase system performance.

PC applications commonly access DRAM data in 4-quad word (Qword) burst lengths. Optimum system performance is achieved when data is fed to the processor on par with the system clock. Data access from an L2 cache comes close to meeting this requirement as typical when only one or two wait states are inserted while accessing the first data. The remaining three Qwords are delivered on a par with the processor speed, denoted as a 2/1/1/1 burst rate. When, however, the requested data must come directly from DRAM, the burst rate is degraded. Assuming the burst is from a DRAM page that is already open (page hit), the achievable burst rate at 66MHz using 60ns FPM DRAMs is 5/3/3/3 cycles; for EDO DRAMs it is 6/2/2/2. SyncDRAMs can reduce burst rates to 7/1/1/1 for L2 cache misses. While SyncDRAM takes more time to locate the first data bit, it then is faster at retrieving the next three Qwords. Furthermore, it really excels at back-to-back reads, as noted in the following comparison which assumes a page hit:

Tests employing the Winstone 32 system level benchmark show SyncDRAM-based systems outperforming comparable EDO-based systems by about 15% for configurations without an L2 cache. Even in systems equipped with a 512K cache, SyncDRAM provides a performance benefit of 5%. These results confirm that consumers will benefit from a performance increase in any application when using a SyncDRAM-based system.
