Message history not shown in encrypted room

Steps to reproduce

1. Join an encrypted room with a message history and the following settings:

For timeline to load

Can see only a few room events prior to joining and only one message (not that there are older pinned messages which I can read):

S-Major because I can't access the room history at all. Occasional because it requires encryption to be enabled.

Might be a duplicate of #18325 but clicking on the timestamp doesn't load history for me beyond one message back.

Workaround from #16983 (switching to another room and back) doesn't work.

Anything I can do to help debug as this is still reproducible a day later?

Does it repro with pinned messages switched off?

Yes, with pinning switched off, I can't trigger any of the older messages to load. I still can't access old messages in that room

The issue here is you don't have any keys for this room, as you are only sent keys

1. at message send time, if you are joined/invited to the room, but you weren't for historic messages
2. at invite time, by the inviter, but since you self-joined, no one will send you historic keys

This looks like a duplicate of element-hq/element-meta#647 to me

I'm trying to verify if I was invited or given a link for the room (search isn't working for me right now so I can't do that easily). Not being able to read the messages means that I can't do my work effectively. Can there be a way to re-request the keys from someone else?

Even if you were invited, the share-keys-on-invite is best effort and only supported when being invited by Web/Desktop, best effort meaning only certain megolm sessions are marked in a way which makes them shareable, there's a lot of edges you need to hit to reach the happy path.
