Short transmissions prevent switching back to FM radio #384

  1. Set radio to memory mode
  2. Enable FM mode
  3. Make the radio receive a short transmission for the memory mode frequency
  4. Occasionally the radio gets stuck in memory mode and never switches back to FM radio
  5. If the radio receives more transmissions sometimes it unsticks itself and switches back to FM

I can't reproduce.

Maybe it has something to do with the memory channel, it happens the most when I listen to inputs on a government repeater.

The memory for the repeater has RxCTCS, TxCTCS, and positive tx offset in the 440 MHz band. My radio is usually in Reverse mode for inputs only so my screen says CT L+R.

Sometimes I set up my A/B so they're on the same memory and both in reverse mode, but I can't remember if my radio was like that when I get the FM issue. Dual watch doesn't work with FM radio anyways so this is probably unrelated.

RxMode is set to main tx/dual rx.

Edit: Okay I managed to reproduce it. I tried to document the settings.

A is a government repeater with RxCTCS, TxCTCS, positive tx offset in 440 band and it is set to Reverse mode. (CT L+R)
B is a government repeater with RxCTCS, TxCTCS, negative tx offset in 144 MHz narrowband but it is in normal mode (CT L-N)

My cursor is set to B. I enable FM mode. I receive audible transmissions that break squelch, then a series of weak transmissions that flash green RX light on the radio but do not break squelch (inaudible due to RxCTCS maybe.) For every RX flash the upper-left corner of the radio flashes "R FM" which turns back into "FM" when the light is not flashing. The radio stops switching to FM.

I unplug my antenna from the port. I notice the RX light still flashes sometimes even with the antenna off. The radio still does not switch to FM even after 10s of no green light.

I plug my antenna back in and eventually get a strong enough transmission that is audible and breaks squelch. After the transmission ends the radio switches back to FM after a few sconds.

The offset and bands seem unrelated, I can reproduce it like this with a second radio: (the other radio can be any radio that supports CTCSS or DCS)

  1. Select a channel in memory mode, with CTCSS on, in both radios
  2. Open FM radio on main radio
  3. TX from other radio with CTCSS. Main radio switches away from FM radio since squelch was broken
  4. TX from other radio without CTCSS, before the main radio switches back to FM radio. RX light flashes, but no squelch. The main radio will now be stuck here and not switch back to FM radio on its own
  5. TX from other radio again with CTCSS. If squelch breaks, the main radio will switch back to FM radio mode after a while, as usual

Briefly tested with DCS too, seems to be the same result.

The radio also stops responding to most button presses in this frozen state. Exit still works though, which is good. Short of rebooting, that seems to be the only workaround.
