in paper is xfem the dem solver.

See example in PreCICE with openfoam and deal II:
https://precice.org/tutorials-multiple-perpendicular-flaps.html

Lethe can simulate particles like closed source xfem in the papers.

All deal II examples in precice are possible for 6-way-extension with Lethe:
https://precice.org/tutorials-turek-hron-fsi3.html

perhaps openfoam is here not necessary and Lethe with deal II is enough.

That would indeed be possible. I am unsure I understand your issue here. Is this something you would like to try to achieve or is it something you wish we would provide?

I see here potential by development here in Lethe to extend to 6 way with more deal II.
That is for the developers here.

second an extended example in precice Is possible with Lethe instead of xfem. An adapter to lethe is here necessary in Precice.

in both ways the papers with results are available to reach the target FSI coupling and DEM.
