For me the best experience is when I have good support for rewinding subtitles. Because of this, I'd like to have them well supported when a new video starts playing.

Do you think this could be an option in the app?

I have implemented this feature in 0.16.2.

See the relevant line in the release notes:

  • (New Feature) Set Preferred Video Quality - With a new option in the video quality option menu, users can now choose their preferred YouTube quality between last selected and lowest and highest quality (with seek friendly and all streams) options

With that, I am closing this issue.

There was an oversight I had to fix in 0.16.3. Please let me know if there's any more problems as I did rush this one overnight.
