The style that should be conveyed for code for the planet is a combination of hacker purity and themes of earth and nature.
Regarding nature focus might be on sky and water themes. So blue is one suggestion for a main color.
I'm a backend dev untrained in giving a website a decent look that's beyond an ultra basic style. So I'd be happy with both suggestions and even more so with contributions. No matter how small they are.
If the logo is in your way or you want to improve it, you can do so, but I'd like to stick to the planet-like icon. It's a Dyson Sphere which has slightly related meaning to the whole concept.
Most important is a clear overview and readability I'd say. A main part of the site are lists, so they should look decent as well. The following sites are good in this regard, at least in my humble opinion. But codefortheplanet.org might also profit from not being the next white-dominant site. Software devs and hackers prefer black or darker colors, at least that's my impression. So a dark blue might not be a bad choice.
That's just for some input, to not leave you with nothing. You as a potential contributor actually have a large degree of freedom and will be featured in the list of contributors.

I'd like to help with the design if you are still looking? I'm not a professional designer as I've only been learning a few months. I can't code so it'll be strictly just a design mockup. Check out my Dribbble profile to see where I'm at skill wise.

http://datalook.io/ (regarding the lists it's quite close to codefortheplanet, but for cftp they must be taller)
