Nyaa~! (≧ω≦) So like, the GNU General Public Licenses (which we can call GPL, nya~) are these super important free software licenses that are all about sharing and keeping things free for all the cuties who wanna use them! \(^▽^)/ They make sure users can run, study, share, and even change the software as much as they like, uwu! It was first written by this big brain guy, Richard Stallman, who started the Free Software Foundation (FSF) for the GNU Project, meow~ (^・ω・^ )

The GPL licenses are special because they're "copyleft," which means if you make any changes or derivatives of the software, you gotta share it under the same or similar terms, nya~! It’s kinda stricter than other licenses like BSD, MIT, or Apache, which are more chill (´,,•ω•,,)♡ but that’s what makes it so purrfect for keeping things fair! >w<

The GPL has been super famous in the free and open-source software (FOSS) world, nya! (UwU) Some of the most well-known programs that use it are the Linux kernel and the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC)! This cool guy named David A. Wheeler says that the copyleft part of GPL was really important for making Linux-based systems so pawsome, mew~ ✨ It gave all the programmers that warm fuzzy feeling that their work would stay free for everyone to enjoy and wouldn't get snatched by greedy companies (ノω<。)

Oh, and like in 2007, they made version 3 (GPLv3) to fix some stuff from the older version (GPLv2), nya~! But don’t worry, the GPL has this "any later version" clause that lets you choose to use newer versions of the license if you want, nya! Some projects, like the GNU Project, have that option, while others like the Linux kernel are just GPLv2, nyaaaa~ (。♥‿♥。)

The "or any later version" clause is even called a "lifeboat clause" sometimes, 'cause it keeps everything compatible between different GPL versions! How cool and thoughtful, nya~! (✿◠‿◠)
