Established in 1958, it has its roots in the Vidyodaya Pirivena, a renowned Buddhist educational center founded in 1873 by Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thera. The university is situated in Gangodawila, Nugegoda, near Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, the administrative capital of the country.
