Qubes OS release

Qubes OS 4.1

Brief summary

Audio VM based on debian-11-minimal works properly, but when debian is upgraded to testing branch. Qubes trying to play sound show no error but no sound gets played.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Create Audio VM based on debian-11-minimal
  2. Check that sound works in connected qubes
  3. Change debian apt source to tesing and qubes apt source to bullseye-testing. In my case source list looks like this:
deb http://2s4yqjx5ul6okpp3f2gaunr2syex5jgbfpfvhxxbbjwnrsvbk5v3qbid.onion/debian/ testing main contrib non-free
deb [arch=amd64] http://deb.qubesosfasa4zl44o4tws22di6kepyzfeqv3tg4e3ztknltfxqrymdad.onion/r4.1/vm bookworm-testing main
  1. Update Debian
  2. Connected qubes now produce deafening silence. Sound can be played directly in Audio VM though.

Expected behavior

Sound should work bot on debian stable and testing

Actual behavior

Sound does not work. There is a simple (but not clean) fix available though. Instead of moving qubes debian repo to bookworm-testing you can keep it at bullseye like this:

deb http://2s4yqjx5ul6okpp3f2gaunr2syex5jgbfpfvhxxbbjwnrsvbk5v3qbid.onion/debian/ testing main contrib non-free
deb [arch=amd64] http://deb.qubesosfasa4zl44o4tws22di6kepyzfeqv3tg4e3ztknltfxqrymdad.onion/r4.1/vm bullseye main

You will then need to hold some packages at their current versions, but sound will work.
