A dash (-) is automatically treated as a minus sign and automatically spaces characters placed after. So negative 7 looks like - 7 instead of -7. Furthermore, it doesn't automatically space after the equal sign but adding a space is more distance than the autospace placed after the space usually.
My current workaround is just creating a new equation.

Thanks for your interest in this project! Unfortunately, this is just a 3rd party documentation project, we cannot add anything to Google Docs that isn't there already. I'll leave this open in case anyone knows of a way to achieve what you are looking for using existing Google Docs features.
I also am a little frustrated about this too. To get around it, I just use a - symbol outside of the equation box. It gets tedious which is why I came here to try and find another way.
