Our team is going to take on the challenge of cleaning up TIGER roads in Washington State
http://maproulette.org/mr3/browse/challenges/2871

Verify that roads tags as highway=residential are correctly tagged. Many of the roads should be either highway=unclassified or highway=track. In some case the road doesn't exist and should be removed. The purpose is to make driving with OSM data in rural areas safer.

Instructions:
Align ways to image
Image Sources:

  • DigitalGlobe Standard/Premium
  • Bing imagery
  • Mapbox imagery
  • ESRI imagery

Turn on Tiger 2017 back ground layer.
Remove tiger:review=no (or change to yes)

Isolated ways or dead end ways
These are roads that don't connect to anything or are only connected to one other road. Often these are driveways.
Check for connections on either end if it's a dead end way
Change to highway=track if this is a 4WD way
Change to highway=unclassified if this is more than a 4WD track
Remove tiger:review=no (or change to yes)
Remove if it isn't visible on imagery
Update surface tag (paved/unpaved) if clearly visible from imagery.

Connected ways
Change to path or track
Align to imagery
Remove tiger:review=no (or change to yes)
