Improve build.sh

To avoid existing pitfalls and possibly migrate to a different buid solution in the future we need to improve build.sh: it should be consistent (e.g. use version numbers everywhere), do only what's necesseray (remove cruft and pre 1.0 logic), be as easy as possible to understand and as idempotent as possible.
