Backports #29986 to fix #30067.
As declared in #30067 (comment), this PR was confirmed to fix the bug on master. I have also checked that the bug is fixed on this branch (i.e. applying the fix on the release-1.0 branch also fixes the bug).

Feel free to close this PR if you prefer to do all backports in one PR as done for v1.0.1 and v1.0.2. I just opened the PR as I am currently affected by this bug and having it fixed on the release-1.0 branch would be convenient but it is not critical.

Since #29986 has the backport label it will be automatically picked up by #30010.
