The original JPEG library variant maintained and published by the Independent JPEG Group (IJG), is no longer well maintained:

"Many projects are now using libjpeg-turbo instead of libjpeg, including popular Linux distributions (Fedora, Debian, Mageia, openSUSE, ...), Mozilla, and Chrome" and VTK.

Additionally the conda-forge build of ITK also uses libjpeg-turbo as a system library instead of Libjpeg:
