How to fill edit_fields automatically when I save data

Example
Have two fields 'title' and 'alias'. Need to check if 'alias' is empty then fill it automatically, with random data, or take data from 'title', or if 'alias' contains data then make it to lower case. I can't understand where I should to past my 'if' condition and function.
Help please.
