Space between items

Is there any way to decrease the spacing between the items in the sidebar (vertically)? I tried setting the padding and margin to 0 but that didn't seem to do anything. It seems like there is quite a bit of space between the sidebar items.

I have discovered the itemPadding and itemMargin and that generally works but when selecting items it seems to make them bigger or "pull them to the front" by increasing the padding although I have set the selectedItemPadding and margin to 0. I will keep working on it.
