The word "variant" means nothing to players and doesn't communicate anything relevant to the context. I know the option doesn't do very much at the moment, but I think this is a small/easy thing to address that's going to alleviate some confusion.

What does variants currently do? I tried a few different settings with a few different tables and was not able to find any difference.

They change the models used by the table (this is still broken when using the Exit to menu button, I hope you're not still using that :D ). Right now that's pretty much just bumpers, but longer term, I see that expanding to encompass rollover targets/lightpads, speed pads, spinners and other obstacles (not ramps - they're too table specific).

Right now, kednar's uses kgunn's bumpers (the bumpers in kendar's table aren't using the variant stuff).

Here's a look at the difference between the lightsoda and kgunn bumpers (lightsoda on top):
