I stumbled upon this project by chance.

I find this project highly interesting. I prefer a python implementation of this. I was wondering out of curiosity, why the choice of Java? Are there some very strong reasons for choosing Java? What about other JVM languages like scala for example?

Can it even be ported to python 3?
