Extracting references from pdf directly

Given the pdf file, can't this tool be used to extract the list of references (like the way it does for images and fulltext) ?

The supplied examples on the readme file ask in to pass a reference string to get the reference. But what is a reference string? Do I manually copy paste the reference section of a pdf and pass that as a string?
