There's been internal reports of confusion about the Fiverr site logo option in options-general.php.

Site Logo needs differentiation from Site Icon, or the option needs tighter integration with the Site Icon option.

The main source of confusion seems to be that one label says Site Logo and the other says Site Icon, it's not clear what each of these do and how they relate.

Could we get some design input on how to proceed with changes (if any are required)? cc @matt-west

This came up in a walkthrough p58i-jWh-p2 but there has also been some discussion in slack. p1739875035050509-slack-C029GN3KD

OpenAI suggested the following labels for this issue:

  • [Feature Group] Appearance & Themes: The issue involves confusion regarding site branding elements, specifically the differentiation between the Site Logo and Site Icon, which are part of site appearance.
  • [Feature] Customizer: The customization options for the Site Logo and Site Icon would likely be accessed through the Customizer, hence relevant to this issue.
  • [Feature] Appearance & Themes: Differentiating between the Site Logo and Site Icon relates directly to how users perceive and customize their site’s visual identity.

I think it makes sense for Site logo and Site icon to remain different things as they serve different purposes.

  • Site icon - Displayed in browser tabs, bookmark bars, and within the WordPress mobile apps
  • Site logo - The logo displayed on the site itself.

The site icon needs to be square, wheres the site logo may use a different aspect ratio.

General Settings

I agree that this placement of Site logo in General settings is confusing though. There’s no option to change the logo here, only the upsell banner.

Image

The logo generated by Fiverr could be reused as the site icon, so the upsell is arguably relevant here but we should drop the Site Logo label. We could place the upsell in a notice to be consistent with how we’re displaying similar callouts elsewhere, and nest it under the Site Icon field.

Editor

Given that the Site Logo is changed from within the editor, we should surface this upsell there too. I’m not sure how easy it is for us to hook into this Choose logo menu, but it feels like a relevant place to highlight the option.

We’d need to open the Fiverr option in a new tab as it just links out to their website. That doesn’t feel great, but I’m not aware of a way that we could embed that flow within a modal to keep the user in the editor.

Interestingly, Jetpack opted to add their AI logo generator as a dedicated icon button, rather than putting it in the choose logo menu. That’s another option, but it relies on the user reading the tooltip to understand what it does.

Works for me, lets make this issue about updating this design and we can take a look at the editor change while we're at it (but maybe spin off into a new issue if the need arises.)
