Steps to reproduce:

  1. Set a static front page and a posts page
  2. Log out and load each page a few times to register some views for them
(fewer for one of them so you can tell them apart easily when you check stats for them next)
  3. Log in and go to https://wordpress.com/stats/day for the site
  4. Look in the "Posts & Pages" box and check to see how the stats are labeled

Result: stats for the static front page are filed under that page's title even though it is the home page and stats for the posts page are labeled "Home page / Archives" even though it is not currently the home page.

We should adjust the label for "Home Page / Archive" to just read "Archive" in these cases.
Preferably, views on my home page would be counted toward "Home Page" (rather than the static page title). It's easy to forget that page's title and wonder what that page is (especially if it hasn't been given an obvious title like "Home").

If a site has a Posts page set, views on the posts page could be called "Posts Page / Archive" or "Blog Page / Archive" and link to that posts page. If there isn't a Posts page for the site, it could be "Archive" and not link anywhere.

I don't know best practices for stale tickets, but this issue came up again for a user so I'm re-opening.

EDIT: to be specific, this user is bothered that the WordPress.com site address shows up as Archive and their home page is a second entry, as is described in the second half of this ticket.

Re-opening a stale issue that has reoccurred is 👍, thanks @jessestu !

Another best practice would be to include a short quote from the user explaining the problem or confusion and the internal reference number at the bottom. This helps people who either do not have access to Automattic's internal tools or even if they do and cannot easily access them quickly.

Also have a user with an Atomic site on wpcom that has this issue. They have never used the WordPress.com site address, but see stats for both:

I am reopening this issue as this came up again here 9360219-zen.

It appears that the label "Home page / Archives" on the Stats is causing confusion to our users. In addition, the URL shows the WPCOM address and not the *wpcomstaging nor the site's primary domain name.

Here's a screencast of a sample: https://cln.sh/ft103CGb

📌 REPRODUCTION RESULTS

  • Tested on Simple – Replicated
  • Tested on Atomic – Replicated

📌 FINDINGS/SCREENSHOTS/VIDEO
If a static front page is set, there's no indicator for front page visits like there is for posts-on-front sites. Maybe adding a home icon or "front page" or (home) could help

📌 ACTIONS

  • Triaged
  • Moving to Jetpack; @Automattic/prometheus would you know who can help with this?

OpenAI suggested the following labels for this issue:

  • [Feature Group] Content Management: The issue relates to how content is managed and displayed, particularly regarding page stats.
  • [Feature] Stats Data: The problem specifically deals with how the stats for the static front page are incorrectly labeled, thus directly impacting the stats tracking feature.
  • [Feature] Posts: The issue discusses the labels used for the posts page and home page, which is related to how posts are counted and categorized.

Thanks @gibrown ; do I need to move this back to wp-calypso? I'm just catching up on pings here and noticed another stats issue I'd moved to Jetpack got moved back.

Yup, since the Stats screen is developed in the Calypso repo, it's probably better there.
