Tell us what you are trying to do

I've had a request for information about skin parts in our collection. I can't figure out how to export all the information that I have been asked for. This is the subset of records that the information has been asked for:

https://arctos.database.museum/search.cfm?guid_prefix=OGL%3AGenomic&phylclass=mammalia&part_name=skin

I have been asked for:

  • species
  • sample size
  • collection time
  • location
  • conservation method
  • if the animal was alive at the time of sampling or time between death and the sampling

Here is what I think that correlates to in Arctos:

  • GUID
  • Identified As
  • Start Date
  • End Date
  • Higher Geography
  • Specific Locality
  • Decimal Lat
  • Decimal Long
  • Coordinate error
  • the record attributes OGL uses? (age, body condition, body width, description, gonad weight, height, individual count, life stage, processing history, reproductive data, sex, standard length, total length, verbatim agent, verbatim attribute, weight, width?)
  • record remarks ? (trying to think where information about time since death may have been recorded if it exists.)
  • part (skin sample) weight?
  • part preservation

Help? is this what people use reports for? I would just add all of these fields to my search page (at least the record ones), but not all of the fields are options for me to toggle on.

I would suggest using Began Date or End Date instead of verbatim, as it would be standardized; unless your verbatim dates are already standardized and include time.
I assume they just want only preservation or preparation attributes? Conservation is sometimes used in that context.
As for time of death/time of sample archive - we have been recording those data for several years, but there hasn't been a field or fields to use to enter those values. Our most recent data have gone into record remarks in this format:
dead on arrival: no | time of death: 10:30 | time of tissue archive: 11:06 | elapsed time: 0:36

Our migrated data would have been standardized but new data won't be now that we have access to verbatim, begin, and end, so this is a great note, thanks.

Yes, this is fully my interpretation as well. Ach, editing my list now to include that.

record remarks

That makes sense to me; I could also imagine it being in verbatim attribute. And since we only get the data that people give us...this information is certainly not something that is widespread in our collection!

@happiah-madson

  1. What is the format do you want to end up with? CSV, nicely formatted table as a PDF? something else?
  2. is this a one-time snapshot of your mammal skins or does this need to be dynamic (i.e. just a search that can be performed over and over again?)
  3. what's the expected total number of records?
    thx

CSV is what I am use to working with for these kinds of request, so that would be my preference.

One-time snapshot of my mammal skins

  1. What's the expected total number of records?
